When PS1 Turned 30, Former PlayStation Chief Joined with No Game-Making Know-how
PlayStation is marking a significant milestone as it celebrates the 30th anniversary of its original console. This journey has been filled with interesting tales and lessons, as revealed in an interview with former Sony Interactive Entertainment America president Shawn Layden.

Uncover the Secrets of PlayStation's Early Years

The Launch and Early Days

PlayStation's 30th anniversary is a cause for celebration. In an interview with Eurogamer, former Sony Interactive Entertainment America president Shawn Layden shared memories of the early days. He joined PlayStation in 1996, a year after its launch in North America and Japan. Layden had previously worked with the then PlayStation president Terry Tokunaka on Sony's acquisition of Columbia Pictures, which gave him some familiarity.During that time, the concept of a video game producer was new to Layden. When offered the position at Sony Computer Entertainment, he was honest about his lack of knowledge in making video games. However, Terry Tokunaka was upfront, stating that none of them knew much either and that it was the perfect time to learn together. This decision by Tokunaka proved to be a smart one. The early years of the PS1 are remembered fondly for their innovation and experimentation. Games were made quickly, took more risks, and produced unique results.

Layden's Journey at SIEA

Layden's career at Sony continued to flourish. He went on to become the president of SIEA from 2014 to 2019. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in shaping the company's future. His experience and leadership during those years left a lasting impact. After Layden's departure, Jim Ryan took over as the president of SIEA. This transition marked a new chapter in the company's history.
