HyperTexting: Bridging the Open Web and Social Media Experience
HyperTexting, a new application, endeavors to fuse the expansive nature of the open web with the engaging format of social media, offering a novel approach to online content consumption and creation. This platform seeks to reclaim the internet's initial vision of individual expression and control, departing from the centralized, algorithm-driven landscape of contemporary social networks.

Redefining Online Interaction: The HyperTexting Vision

Reimagining Web Navigation: A Social Feed Experience

A recently launched application, HyperTexting, is poised to revolutionize web browsing by mirroring the scrollable, user-friendly interfaces commonly found on social media platforms such as Facebook or X. Now accessible on iOS, this app also streamlines the act of updating one's personal website, making it as effortless as sending a text message.

The Genesis of HyperTexting: Recalling the Web's Roots

Caleb Hailey, a tech veteran with two decades of experience, conceived this algorithm-free vision for the internet's future. He fondly remembers a time when the web promised individual domain ownership and widespread content publication. This decentralized ideal, however, gradually receded with the ascent of social media.

Social Media's Impact: Shifting Online Paradigms

Hailey observed that social media's rise made creating and posting to a page simpler than managing a traditional website, ultimately altering how people engaged with the internet. This shift led to the normalization of features like scrollable feeds, user profiles, and interactive elements such as 'follow,' 'like,' and 'comment' buttons.

HyperTexting's Core: Marrying Familiarity with Functionality

These established social media conventions serve as the foundation for HyperTexting. The app enables users to subscribe to websites, news sources, blogs, and podcasts with ease. Consequently, users can browse articles, essays, and multimedia content in a format highly reminiscent of a modern social media feed.

Beyond Twitter's Algorithmic Shift: A Creator's Inspiration

Hailey's motivation for developing HyperTexting stemmed from observing Twitter's evolution, particularly its departure from a chronological timeline to an algorithmic one. He noted that this change, coupled with the devaluation of external links, diminished the platform's utility for content discovery and sharing.

Escaping the "Doom Scrolling" Phenomenon: A Personal Quest

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the concept of "doom scrolling" highlighted the negative impact social media could have on mental well-being. This experience prompted Hailey to uninstall social apps and return to an RSS news reader, NetNewsWire, for information consumption. Concurrently, he developed a static website generator for iPhone, aiming to simplify web publishing.

Bridging the Gap: Making RSS Accessible to All

Hailey realized that his disparate passions could converge into a familiar and intuitive platform, addressing the long-standing challenge of making RSS appealing to a broader audience. This realization culminated in the creation of HyperTexting, an app that discretely utilizes RSS technology while simplifying the process of publishing to one's own website.

The Unsung Hero: The Enduring Role of RSS

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an open protocol that remains a fundamental component of the web's infrastructure, powering diverse platforms like WordPress blogs and podcast feeds. Despite its utility, RSS has struggled to gain mainstream adoption as a direct consumption method.

Overcoming Past Failures: A Fresh Approach to Content Aggregation

Historically, efforts to introduce mainstream consumers to RSS readers, such as Google Reader's shutdown in 2013, have largely been unsuccessful. HyperTexting seeks to overcome this by presenting web content in a universally appealing, scrollable feed format, diverging from the traditional RSS reader interface.

Empowering Creators: Publishing to Personal Platforms

In addition to offering a seamless content consumption experience, HyperTexting allows users to connect their personal websites, including WordPress blogs, Ghost newsletters, or sites built with open-source static site generators like Hugo or HyperTexting's own HyperTemplates. This functionality encourages users to publish directly to their own domains, rather than relying solely on centralized social media platforms.

Fostering Dialogue: Connecting Content to Community

When a user posts content through HyperTexting, it is linked to their original website or article and appears in the feeds of others who follow that same site. This mechanism aims to foster a more direct and decentralized form of online dialogue.

Discovering Trends: The "Explore" Section

The app features an "Explore" section, which highlights trending content from across the web. This functionality serves as a contemporary interpretation of services like Nuzzel, which previously identified popular discussions on platforms such as Twitter.

Seamless Integration: Browsing with the Safari Extension

An optional Safari extension further enhances the HyperTexting experience, allowing users to effortlessly add new websites to their follow list directly while browsing the internet.

Simplifying the Digital Landscape: A Return to Core Principles

Hailey reflects on the increasing complexity of technology over the past two decades and questions the constant urge to reinvent foundational concepts. He posits that the World Wide Web itself is the ultimate decentralized social network, advocating for its continued utilization as a robust platform for communication and information exchange.

Sustainability and Growth: HyperTexting's Future Model

Developed by Hailey's Herd Works, HyperTexting is currently available as a free download on iOS. Future plans include the potential introduction of premium subscriptions for advanced features or the integration of a single sponsored post per day to ensure the app's ongoing viability and development
